Incredibly good stuff, but something that clearly demands a listening environment I’m never going to be able to give it, even moreso than Radiohead. The found footage genre has become well-established in the world of horror films, and the Paranormal Activity franchise has worked the formula to a science. That’s something that feels very particular to the era and I do kind of miss anyone trying to do something like this today would be meticulous about sounding like what they’re trying to revive, rather than trying to summon the transcendental ethos.īy the time this album finished I genuinely felt disoriented. This also has something that feels very of its era where it’s like, clearly got some revivalist stuff going on, there’s reaching back to like Queen and Def Leppard or something, but it’s not a meticulous reconstruction of earlier sounds, it’s trying to get the same vibe with contemporary means maybe. This thing where the entire album is like the climax of the most climactic song on every other album put together but the whole time is pretty cool, and I like the one where he seems to actually be trying to sound bestial. Hearing this now, this would have been even less comprehensible to me at the time than Dizzee Rascal would have. I guess it goes without saying that they changed a bunch of the rules about how running for student government worked the next year.Īgain, never heard the guy’s music at any point during this process. The history teacher I'd tried to bond with over a shared love of prog rock and RPGs took up an entire double period to argue with me about how I'd made a mockery of the democratic process. Here’s a picture of the vice principal tearing it down:Īnyways I told the shaggy dog joke during my allotted speech time as intended (twice actually, I had to do it for two sections, though I think they cut my mic way earlier during the second speech). Is Also Capable Of Pop Culture References”. So I did not get approval and just put this Andrew WK poster up with a banner that said “Jeremy K. My friend and I were talking about this with the tech guy at the university station and he was like “Hey, I have something you might be able to use.” He goes to the overflowing closet of promo stuff and rustles around and brings out this rolled up log, unscrolls it slightly and says like “I don’t know who this guy is, but they sent us a bunch of these and nobody wants to put them up anywhere.” This guy was putting up surplus movie posters and standees all over the school like Harry Potter Endorses or IS The Pianist or whatever. One of the guys I was “running against” worked at a movie theatre, a very enviable culture industry job in the high school ecosystem (I was doing call centre work for a magazine called “iSell” that was like a printed version of Craigslist, cold calling everyone with an ad in the classifieds in any local publication asking if they wanted to run duplicate ads with us). You were allotted 20 photocopies for your campaign so I got this Zamfir LP from the nearby Goodwill and put xeroxes of it up all over the school. Inspired by this, too many middle school evenings reading the Gordan Koraman novel where they get a fictional student elected to student government, and the fact that I’d recently learned the shaggy dog joke, I decided to run for head boy. I thought this was the greatest idea I’d ever heard. My dad was a high school teacher and one day he was complaining about this student at his school who ran for a different student government position every year and he would always go up and use his entire allotted speech time to just eat a sandwich. Me and my friend would bus in from our peripheral high school to the almost equally peripheral university to hang out in the tech room wrapping cables and doing menial editing for internal programming advertisements and generally shooting the breeze with the one professional tech guy on staff who was exactly like you probably think he was. When I was in high school I used to volunteer in a technical capacity at the university community radio station. And this might be hard to believe but I actually used to be even more annoying. I have a weirdly personal relationship with Andrew WK considering I’ve never actually listened to his music in any depth before today.
